Pre-Apprenticeships
 Industry-Recognized Credentials & Related Education Training

This is an opportunity for high school students in Surry County and Yadkin County to complete a paid Pre-Apprenticeship at a local business. Students will gain valuable real-world experience and earn high school credit, college credit, industry-recognized credentials, and a financial stipend for travel!

Student Eligibility

Students must:
  • Be in good academic standing to apply for a pre-apprenticeship
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 (preferred, but the final decision about participation rests with the school recommendation).
  • Must have a Junior or Senior or Super Senior high school status and have at least 12-20 hours per week to devote to a pre-apprenticeship position.

**Specific job requirements may apply

Student Requirements

  • Have a career interest and some coursework and/or credentials related to pre-apprenticeships site.
  • Work a minimum of 135 hours during a semester period to receive high school internship credit.
  • Complete program requirement forms such as parental approval, travel documentation, hour verification, and other pertinent forms.
  • Complete any academic courses and/or certifications required of the pre-apprenticeships site.
  • Complete any necessary assignments to receive high school credit for the pre-apprenticeships.
  • Perform satisfactory or higher on performance evaluations.
  • Be flexible! Your schedule may need to be adjusted to include your pre-apprenticeships time and coursework and/or certifications required.

  • Human Resource Development Skills (Soft Skills)
  • Public Speaking
  • Microsoft Outlook & Excel
  • DiSC Behavioral Assessment
  • Introduction to LEAN Manufacturing
  • Personal Finance
  • Resume/Job Interview/Job Searching Skills
  • OSHA 10-Hour Training
  • Students will all earn high school honors credit for their pre-apprenticeship experience
  • Early College High School students receive WBL college credit
  • Industry specific college courses & certifications

Stipends and Travel Expenses

Surry-Yadkin Works has received financial funding from Surry County and Yadkin County Boards of Commissioners to assist with the expenses of this program. Students can receive up to $500 per semester in a stipend and up to $500 per semester for travel expenses, totaling $1000.

Travel: If students provide their own transportation and meet the required monthly hours, they will receive $125 monthly. If students need Surry-Yadkin Works to provide transportation, they will not receive a transportation stipend.

Stipends: Students will receive $100 per month for completing their PA experience. Timesheets and any other required paperwork must be completed to receive the stipend. PA’s will receive a $10 “bonus” stipend for Overall Performance of “Average” on their monthly evaluation and a $25 “bonus” stipend for Overall “Good to Outstanding” on the evaluation.

Employer Pay: Some employers may decide to pay student PAs a wage, give a bonus, or pay for transportation expenses. This is an agreement between the student and the employer.

Meet Our Pre-Apprentices

**Tuition waivers are available for high school students who enter a pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship program while they are still in high school. Registered pre-apprentices have 120 days from the day they graduate to transition into an apprenticeship to remain eligible for the waiver.  This program covers tuition and registration fees.  The following fees are not covered that apprentices would be responsible for: books, lab fees, campus resources, & ancillary fees and expenses.
