What We Do
Surry-Yadkin Works FLEET (Fostering Learning through Education, Employment, and Trades) is an alternative approach to graduating from high school with a focus in manufacturing. This program serves Elkin City Schools, Mount Airy City Schools, Surry County Schools, and Yadkin County Schools students and partners with Altec Industries. Selected students will attend high school classes at Altec for half of the school day and will learn a trade through a paid pre-apprenticeship experience at the same company for the other half of the school day. Altec will pay the apprentices. In addition to standard high school courses, students will receive basic employability/soft skills training and wraparound support services.

Mission
By providing an alternative approach to graduation, students will thrive in their education, get on-the-job training, and have unique employment opportunities to provide a promising future.

  • Helping students understand the importance of their classroom instruction
  • Giving students the opportunity to have real world experience in a manufacturing career field
  • Creating future opportunities and possible future employees for a company that needs them
  • Allowing Altec employers to build alliances with local schools
Student Eligibility
  • Must be 16 years of age before their enrolling semester
  • Must be willing to work 20 hours each week
  • Must have a social security card and birth certificate

**Tuition waivers are available for high school students who enter a pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship program while they are still in high school. Registered pre-apprentices have 120 days from the day they graduate to transition into an apprenticeship to remain eligible for the waiver.  This program covers tuition and registration fees.  The following fees are not covered that apprentices would be responsible for: books, lab fees, campus resources, & ancillary fees and expenses.
