Bio
Myra Cox has 33 years of expertise in education. Most recently, she proudly served as superintendent of Elkin City Schools and retired from that distinguished post in 2023. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a commitment to fostering educational excellence. Dr. Cox has successfully implemented innovative programs and initiatives that have significantly improved student outcomes and staff performance. She creatively engaged her administrators and staff to collaborate on projects to increase student enrollment in their small, rural school district. Together, they launched a Dual Language Immersion program, designed a 3rd-12th grade online academy, partnered with Appalachian State University to open a laboratory school for students who needed a non-traditional way of learning, expanded study abroad programs for students and staff, and concentrated on global education, Pk-12. Under Dr. Cox's leadership, Elkin City Schools was designated as a North Carolina Global-Ready District, received a National Blue Ribbon for Exemplary Student Performance in middle grades education, and consistently ranked in the top 10% for overall North Carolina End-of-Grade achievement, top 5% for graduation rate, and often held the highest teacher retention rate in North Carolina. Dr. Cox attained the North Carolina Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development's "Trailblazer of the Year" Award and was honored as one of the Piedmont Triad's "Businesswomen of the Year" in 2023. She currently excels as the program assistant for Surry-Yadkin Works, a multifaceted work-based learning program, which she helped develop in 2020. Dr. Cox is committed to continuous learning and dedicated to supporting high school and community college students to prepare to thrive as the next generation of the American workforce. Also, Dr. Cox generously dedicates her time as a member of the Hugh Chatham Advisory Board, contributing to the organization's mission of advancing healthcare excellence, and Bear Creek Baptist Church teaching Sunday school and serving as church pianist. Out of work, she enjoys playing the piano, DIY projects, and traveling.
